" Oooohhh baby! This a car that just flat out looks like it means business. After a teaser a few days ago
Audi has now done their full official reveal of their 2014 Le Mans car and it certainly is something to behold. The major changes are under the skin though as although the hybrid turbocharged V6 system from last year is Audi added a second system. This second system recovers heat from the turbocharger and stores the energy as electricity.
That is pretty damn trick and it is no wonder that Audi calls this the most advanced race car they have ever built. Audi says the new car is 30% more efficient than their previous vehicle. Fuel efficiency in a 24 hour race is absolutely vital as a less powerful but more efficient car spending more time on the track rather than in the pits refueling can gain a large advantage.
The car also featuring a KERS (kinetic energy recovery system) for recovering energy under braking. Audi manages to somehow balance this energy with the energy recovered from the turbocharger for an insanely complex hybrid system. Their engineers definitely earned their paychecks on this one.
Rule changes forced aerodynamic changes to the 2014 car as well. Exhaust gases are not allowed to be channeled under the rear diffuser for 2014 so we will have to wait and see how big of an impact this has on the pace of the 2014 cars.
