2013 Audi S7 beats the 2013 Mercedes CLS550 4Matic and 2013 BMW 650i xDrive Gran Coupe in latest Road and Track comparison
Audi continues to rack up impressive magazine comparison victories this time in the "4-door coupe" segment versus the Mercedes CLS and BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe. In the January 2013 issue of Road and Track they pick the A7 over its rivals which they made sure to equip with all wheel drive. Interestingly, the Audi was the quickest through the 1/4 mile but the Mercedes was right there with it in trap speed at 111. The BMW was slower than either even with the updated N63 V8 sporting 445 horses.
As far as overall standings are concerned, the BMW did finish in second with the Mercedes coming in last place. For whatever reason Road and Track faults the looks of the CLS which quite simply they are wrong about. The car is stunning and a great update to the original design. They also fault the interior saying it looks old despite the car coming out in 2011. It really doesn't make any sense. Really, where they said the car came up short was in driving excitement.
The second place BMW was regarded as having the best transmission and steering response. They wrote they wanted to give it the victory but it's the BMW's ride comfort that gave it the loss. Really? This is why it loses? It's more fun to drive than either of the other two and admittedly more sporty and because some old men didn't like potholes it loses? Road and Track, what's wrong with you? If they are going to fault the BMW or not give it the victory for a solid reason they should mention that the BMW is by far the heaviest car in the test and approaching 4700 pounds.
The Audi wins because the BMW's ride is too harsh. But it's not like it the Audi is not a great car. It isn't rated as much fun to drive but it is more comfortable and faster. Really, it's tough to take this one seriously when Road and Track basically states the BMW should have the victory. Definitely not Road and Track's best work. Regardless, the full comparison is below come to your own conclusion.
