    • BMW E46 M3 CSL vs. B5 Audi RS4 drag and rolling races

This is a forbidden fruit drag race that every hardcore American BMW or Audi enthusiast wants to see. Why? Because BMW did not sell the E46 M3 CSL in the USA and Audi did not sell Americans the B5 RS4 Avant because apparently we hate wagons.

Two of the most iconic BMW and Audi performance cars of their time simply were not sold in the USA. A slap in the face to American enthusiasts where these companies make most of their money.

Both vehicles are very different and represent each manufacturers' philosophy in arguably their purest form. Audi showing off a high performance all wheel drive and turbocharged wagon which has the torque to move its heavier chassis and BMW squeezing every last horse out of a high revving naturally aspirated inline-6 in a fairly light and well balanced rear wheel drive 3-Series.

Now everything blurs together and is nowhere near as exciting as when these legends squared off. Turbo this, automatic that, all wheel drive this, yawn.

Enough nostalgia, how do they stack up? Well, on paper the RS4 should have the advantage in a drag race due to all wheel drive, a manual transmission, and turbo torque. The E46 M3 is very tricky to launch with rear wheel drive and an SMG (sequential manual) transmission featuring launch control software that is archaic by today's standards.

Somehow the CSL dominates the RS4 (poor driving?) off the line and in the drag race.

The roll race has both start at 50 mph in 3rd gear which is not ideal for the low torque M3 which should be in second at that speed. At least Carwow doesn't wait for the automatic mode to select the right gear for the M3 like they usually do.

Because of the M3 starting in the wrong gear the roll race is closer than it should be. If they were driven properly the RS4 would be closer in the drag race than the roll race.

They take them on a roadcourse but do not provide laptimes. The CSL is the better track car though.

Rs4 should win the drag race comfortably, was driven very poorly.

M3 should win a track battle comfortably.

        Both are cool cars

Ya, pretty sure that 99% of folks on this board are aware how fast the (factory) B5 RS4's are in a straight line contest, and w/just an exhaust/tune...there's pretty much no NA M3 (modded or not) that will keep up w/ a modded RS4. On the twisties, pretty sure the outcome would be reversed.

I haven't seen bolt on B5 RS4's trap above 115? Either way, yeah, they're potent.

RS4 had a horrible launch and looked to bog 1st and 2nd gear somehow. The roll race showed they are pretty evenly matched.

That channel is just waste of time, he is making drag races with cars that aren't in the same category, he made the bmw win every drag race coz he bought the 8 series, maybe they got him a discount for that. Click here to enlarge

It is a poor channel with poor testing that unfortunately gets many views and some good cars that we can't test here.

It's unfortunate this cookie cutter crap passes for testing these days.
